CNN World Cup Destinations: Buena Vista Social Club, the Broadway Musical Celebrating Cuban Music

CNN World Cup 2026 Destinations

If there is one place that truly shines in New York, it is Times Square. From the giant digital billboards to the faces of the people walking through it, everything is illuminated by an energy that never ceases to amaze.

Just a short distance away is Broadway, considered by many to be the world’s capital of musical theater. More than 40 theaters make up this district, bringing some of the most acclaimed productions to life with world-class performances.

Since 2025, one production has received major awards and has also become deeply connected to Latino culture. It is Buena Vista Social Club, based on the true story of the legendary Cuban musical ensemble whose members saw their careers revived just when they thought they had reached the twilight of their lives.

What does it mean to you to portray someone as important as Ibrahim Ferrer?

Honestly, it’s almost a childhood dream come true. Ibrahim Ferrer has always been one of my musical heroes. Through this story, I had to go back to the very basics, and I truly feel that I’m at the best moment of my life.

You weren’t even born when these musicians recorded the album that became an international success, were you?

Well, I came pretty close. I had the opportunity to perform with Omara Portuondo. I also have a very deep connection with Rubén González. I played with an orchestra for which, when he was a young man, he wrote many of the arrangements.

Being able to perform from his handwritten scores is a very spiritual and very real connection that we share—and one that I personally have with Buena Vista Social Club and with Rubén González, the character I portray in this show.

What do you think visitors will take away from this production?

First of all, they’ll be dancing in their seats because our band is one of the best bands in the world. But beyond the music—which they’ll absolutely love—the story is told in such an incredible way.

Beautifully told.

Yes, and it showcases the richness of our culture and the stories of us Latinos from the Caribbean. It’s truly universal.

What’s your favorite song?

The one my mom used to sing to me when I was little. And when I hear it performed by my friend Mel Semé, who is incredible, I cry.

Do you need a napkin?

No, no—I already have my handkerchief. My dad raised me well; he always taught me to carry one.

I always have a handkerchief.

That’s so sweet.

Thank you.

I can’t wait for the curtain to go up and see you perform.

You’re going to be the one crying. Should I lend you my handkerchief?

No, no.

See you in a little while.

Okay.

Dejé morir, dejé morir, dejé morir, dejé morir…

I am absolutely fascinated by this production. I laughed, I cried, but above all, I fell in love with the music. What better way to wrap up my tour of this World Cup host city? Now, all that’s left is to enjoy the soccer.

Bye! Bye!
